Bass-baritone Matthew Burns is celebrated for his musical and comedic capabilities in equal measure. Opera News recently singled out the “vocal and comedic flexibility” in his acclaimed Leporello in Don Giovanni at Detroit Opera. In recent seasons, he has appeared as Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro with both Portland Opera and Utah Opera, returned to The Metropolitan Opera for the reprisal of their production of The Hours, sang Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Delaware Symphony, performed Sergeant of Police in The Pirates of Penzance with Nashville Opera, and portrayed Sulpice in La fille du régiment with Utah Opera. This season, Mr. Burns joins Lyric Opera of Kansas City in La Cenerentola as Don Magnifico, reprises his Don Basilio in Opera Memphis’ Il barbiere di Siviglia, sings the baritone solos in Fauré’s Requiem with St. George’s Episcopal, and performs as The Maharajah in The Last Savage with Odyssey Opera. Upcoming engagements include performing the roles of Benoit/Alcindoro in La bohème with Opera Omaha, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore with Pensacola Opera, and Varlaam in Boris Godunov with Opera Southwest.
