Dominican-born baritone Jean Carlos Rodriguez is establishing himself as a prominent performer on opera stages across the United States. During the 2024-2025 season, Mr. Rodriguez rejoins Opera Tampa as Marcello in La bohème, makes his Opera Southwest debut as the bass soloist in El Mesías, and returns to Sarasota Opera as Alfio / Tonio in Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, as well as a concert of Verdi selections. Recently, he made his Sarasota Opera debut as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and returned to Opera Tampa starring as Germont in La traviata.
Mr. Rodriguez made his company debut with Opera Tampa in 2017 as Paris in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and has since sung Fiorello/Ufficiale in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Schaunard in La bohème, Escamillo in Carmen, Conte di Luna in Il trovatore, and performances in Gianni Schicchi and Cavalleria rusticana. Other roles include the title character in Le nozze di Figaro, Marcello in La bohème and Valentin in Faust with the Savannah VOICE Festival. He also made his debut with the Spanish Lyric Theater as Vidal Hernando in Torroba’s romantic zarzuela Luisa Fernanda.
In concert, Mr. Rodriguez has sung as the baritone soloist for Carmina Burana, Finzi’s In Terra Pax and Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on Christmas Carols, all with The Florida Orchestra. He also sang a concert celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Opera Tampa.
Mr. Rodriguez won the Grand Prize in the Opera Idol Competition with the Savannah VOICE Festival in 2017, and made his Carnegie Hall debut as a finalist in the Getting to Carnegie Competition.
Originally aspiring to be a professional baseball player, Rodriguez’s focus shifted after discovering his passion for opera. Mr. Rodriguez holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Western Connecticut State University.
