New York City-based countertenor Jordan Rutter enjoys a career embracing opera, concert repertoire, and contemporary work. In 2019, Rutter made their joint company and role debut with Chicago Opera Theater as the principal character of Doodle in Stefan Weisman and David Coté’s critically acclaimed The Scarlet Ibis in the work’s 2019 Chicago premiere, and rejoined The American Opera Project and NYU for The Stonewall Operas, performing the roles of Rubes in The Community (Cummines / Greenberg) and Kenny in Outside (Blaskie / Christenfeld). Additional recent highlights include a long association withThree Way  (Paterson / Coté), which Rutter workshopped with AOP in 2016. They performed in the work’s world premiere full production at Nashville Opera and the New York premiere, with the American Modern Ensemble, at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Rutter rejoined AME for their Merkin Hall debut in April 2017, performing excerpts from Three Way in concert, as well as for the work’s world premiere recording. In the fall of 2019, Rutter joined the roster of On Site Opera to sing the role of Miles in The Turn of the Screw, workshopped the role of Lola in Legendary (Rubinstein / Kim) with American Opera Projects, joined The Collegiate Singers as the alto soloist in Messiah, and sang a holiday concert of 17th-century music with La Fiocco. In 2020, Rutter made their American Lyric Theater debut in a workshop of The Opposable Thumb (Ugay / Crouch), joined Cerddorion as the Sorceress in Dido & Aeneas, returned to the AOP / NYU Opera Writing Workshop, and made their Fort Worth Opera debut workshopping the role of Nero in Jim Lowe and Kelley Rourke’s new adaptation of Poppea.


Dedicated to the creation and performance of new music, Rutter has developed the roles of Lola (Legendary), Kyle (Three Way), and the title role of Ashima (Jing Jing Luo) with The American Opera Project. Since 2018, Rutter has worked with students and alumni of NYU Tisch School of the Arts to develop and perform short operas presented as The Dinner Party Operas and The Stonewall Operas. Rutter’s chamber music performances have included the world premieres of the cantata Lay By (Grana / Rummel) and the song draw | pull | drag (R.E. Smith / Billey) for countertenor and solo cello.


In the classical repertoire, Rutter joined New York City’s operamission throughout the 2016-2017 season as co-curator and performer in 53rd Street Handel: a monthly series of original pastiches built upon scenes from twenty-one of Handel’s operas. They made their debut with Opera at Rutgers during the spring of 2017 in a performance of John Blow’s Venus & Adonis, staged by Dietlinde Turban Maazel and accompanied by an ensemble of period instruments under the direction of Dr. Patrick Gardner. Rutter made their off-Broadway debut with Origin Theater Company, curating and performing musical intermezzi of Lieder for the 2016 American premiere of Lot Vekemans’ POISON. During the 2015-2016 season, Rutter participated in the MET LiveArts installation of Mingwei Lee’s Sonic Blossom performing Schubert Lieder in the Arther M. Sackler Gallery. In 2017, Rutter became the first countertenor to perform all four volumes of William Bolcom and Arnold Weinstein’s Cabaret Songs in recital at the Duplex Cabaret Theater in New York City.


Additional highlights of Rutter’s operatic activity include Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Opera on the Avalon, the Sorceress in Dido & Aeneas with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and the role of Le fils de Macduff in the American French-language premiere of Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth.


Rutter’s oratorio credits include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. They have performed the Bach alto solo cantatas Geist und Seele wird verwirret, Vergnügte Ruh’, beliebte Seelenlust, and Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos. In February 2017, Rutter joined the Academy of Sacred Drama for a performance of Scarlatti’s La Giuditta, in which they made their role debut as Oloferne.


Rutter holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from University of North Florida and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
