Octavio MORENO

Hailed for his “sublime baritone” (Arizona Daily Star) with “remarkable ease” (The Independent), Mexican-American baritone Octavio Moreno commands the stage with his voice and presence in both traditional repertoire and new works, bringing an artistry deeply connected to his heritage. His 2024-2025 season included appearances as Laurentino in Cruzar la Cara de la Luna at Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Opera San Antonio, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Arizona Opera, and Escamillo in Carmen at Opera Southwest. In the 2025-2026 season, Mr. Moreno returns to the roles of Laurentino in Cruzar la Cara de la Luna and Moncada in Zorro, joins Opera Las Vegas for their Celebración Latina, and covers the role of Tonio in Pagliacci with Minnesota Opera. Later this season, he will present a concert of Spanish and Latin American music with Opera Idaho. Next season, Mr. Moreno will sing the role of Octavio Rivera y Moncada in Zorro with Utah Opera.

A strong advocate for new and culturally resonant repertoire, Mr. Moreno originated the role of Laurentino in Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, the world’s first mariachi opera, which he premiered at Houston Grand Opera and reprised at Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, Fort Worth Opera, El Paso Opera, San Diego Opera, Teatro Nacional Sucre, and Théâtre du Châtelet. He went on to premiere the role of Xihuitl in El Pasado Nunca Se Termina at Lyric Opera of Chicago, which he also portrayed at Houston Grand Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and San Diego Opera. As the original Moncada in Fort Worth Opera’s production of Zorro, Mr. Moreno returned to the role at Opera Southwest.

Praised for his ability to embody characters with “vitality and fullness” (Houston Chronicle), Mr. Moreno launched his career in the Butler Studio at Houston Grand Opera, where performed the title role in Rigoletto, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, and Sourin in The Queen of Spades. A frequent collaborator with Opera in the Heights, he sang El Duende in María de Buenos Aires, Zurga in Les pêcheurs de perles, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Germont in La traviata, and returned to the title role in Rigoletto. At Moores Opera Center, his roles include John Proctor in The Crucible, Vronsky in David Carlson’s Anna Karenina, and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. With Arizona Opera, Mr. Moreno has also sung Marcello in La bohème, Laurentino in El Milagro del Recuerdo, and Lopez Ibanez in Arizona Lady.

On the concert stage, Mr. Moreno has appeared with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, singing the baritone solo in Carmina Burana, and with the Arizona Philharmonic as the bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah. He has been a featured guest artist with the International Music Festival Orchestra in Belgrade, Serbia, and he performed the baritone solo in Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with the Fred Fox School of Music Orchestra. At the Academy of Vocal Arts, he sang the title role in Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Academy of Vocal Arts Orchestra. His concert work reflects his versatility and vocal distinction across both sacred and symphonic repertoire.

International acclaim for Mr. Moreno’s artistry includes First Prize at the 2018 Linus Lerner International Opera Competition, Third Prize in the Eleanor McCollum Competition, and representation of Mexico at the 2008 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, the 2010 Paris International Competition, Cuba’s Mariana de Gonitch Competition, and Peru’s Premio Ciudad Trujillo. A graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Mr. Moreno earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Arizona.
