Lawson ANDERSON

Hailed for his “powerful, darkly-hued voice and nobility of phrasing and carriage” (Cleveland Classical), Lawson Anderson is quickly establishing himself as one of the leading bass-baritones of his generation. A former management consultant with an MBA from Columbia Business School, Anderson has made waves in the opera world coming off of his Top Prize finish at the 2018 George London Foundation Competition; First Prize award from the Gerda Lissner Foundation’s International Vocal Competition; Opera Index Top Prize Arthur E. Walters Memorial Award, and more.

From 2019-2025, Anderson was an anchor of the Semperoper Dresden Ensemble, taking on the roles of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Leporello and Masetto (Don Giovanni), Donner and Wotan (Das Rheingold), Steuermann (Tristan und Isolde), and Gunther (Götterdämmerung) under the baton of Christian Thielemann; Orest (Elektra), Colline (La bohème), Guglielmo (Cosi fan Tutte), Angelotti (Tosca), Marcel (Les Huguenots), Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte), Barone Douphol and Marchese (La Traviata), Mandarino (Turandot) among others; plus Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) and Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten) in concert with the Staatskapelle Dresden.

Alongside flourishing Summers at the Bayreuther Festspiele as Steuermann in Tristan und Isolde with Semyon Bychkov, further recent highlights include a debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Klingsor (Parsifal) under Tarmo Peltokoski’s baton, as well as with Operhaus Zürich in Christian Spuck’s staged production of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with Nicholas Carter; role debuts as Alberich in Götterdämmerung (Bühnen Bern) and Das Rheingold (Theater Koblenz); a Munich debut with Nathalie Stutzmann and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Mozart’s Requiem; and a return with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis (Stutzmann) and their annual Holiday Concerts featuring Handel’s Messiah.

Anderson has grabbed headlines: “Lawson Anderson is irresistible” (Rupert Christiansen of The Telegraph London) as an interpreter of Mozart, particularly in the title roles of Le nozze di Figaro in over seventy performances at the Semperoper, Nevill Holt Opera, the Music Academy of the West (James Conlon) and at the Berlin Opera Festival; and Don Giovanni with the Cleveland Opera. Lauded interpretations of Nick Bottom in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Nevill Holt; his debut as Méphistophélès in Gounod's Faust; of Rocco in Fidelio at Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; of Wotan in concert at Carnegie Hall; and in recital at the National Opera Center interpreting Schubert’s Die Winterreise have showcased Lawson’s versatility as an artist and actor.
